Ancient Ukrainian beekeeping - Bortnytstvo
Friends, there is good news for you that is directly related to the topic of today's post. Pay your attention!👌😉
✅We would like to talk about a rather unusual topic - Bortnytstvo.
▪️ "Bortnytstvo" - Ukrainian wild-honey farming, an archaic way of apiculture, known in Ukraine since ancient times. It is breeding bees in the "borts", forest beekeeping, a method of beekeeping that replaced the primitive "plucking" of honey by wild bees in tree hollows. Bortnyky (that are, beekeepers) made artificial beehives-hollows in trees or hung beehives-logs high on branches and let swarms into those hollows. As a mass craft, bortnytstvo existed until the 19th century.
▪️ Today, this type of honey production is very rare, unique. Only a few are engaged in such "economical" for bee honey extract. And one of these wonderful people is our friend Maksym Bortnyk - the head of the public organization "Tree Beekeepers of Ukraine" and a researcher of beekeeping. His work is aimed at an in-depth study of beekeeping, which originates in Ukraine.
▪️ Maksym is familiar with the small cohort of people who continue to do this archaic work today. And the best thing is that the bortnyky do their job not for honey, not for profit, but because they really love it:
▫️ because this is way by their ancestors (this is the basis),
▫️ they want to care that the bees have a place to live,
▫️ believed that the bee is a mediator between God and man, so bees are treated as a deity.
It is almost impossible to buy such special honey. Honey differs in taste from the usual, as the board (artificially created hollow in a living tree) is usually hung deep in the woods, where bees collect pollen from forest grasses and etc.
