An ax was used as a household tool as well a weapon. Often the ax, along with other sharp objects (knife, sickle, scythe) was a talisman and means against evil spirits and diseases. Traditionally in folk beliefs an ax associated with masculinity and sexual power. In Viking ax was a very common type of weapon, along with a sword. Researchers believe that it was closely related to the other world.

Symbol in a form of ax was used since ancient times all over the world. For example, in the Middle Ages the Eastern Slavs often cut the umbilical cord of newborn boys with an ax. In Belarus, if the couple wanted a girl, they put beside the bed headboard sickle, and if the boy - an ax. In Ukraine, farmers ax buried in the ground before plowing to ensure a good harvest. Also the symbol was used in Medieval heraldry, for example Leo with an ax is the emblem of Norway.

This type of Medieval pendants was very popular in Slavs and slightly less in Vikings. On the last photo you can see one of the many original and authentic artifacts that were excavated in Ukraine
